Kids on Strike!!!

The week beginning March 24, we moved to the covered court to work on our ball handling skills units. We will stay there till April 8th. We are currently visiting the essential question “What skills do I need to strike a ball successfully?” This is a question that will be good to ask your child to find out how much they have learned in class. Ask them also the kinds of equipment we used for striking.

Children need to come prepared with their PE kit, enclosed athletic shoes and a drink bottle.

ES PE Reminders

We have had many new families arrive this semester and so would like to welcome all those families and let you know some information about the ES PE program. Children need to wear the correct athletic footwear and PE uniform on the days they are scheduled for PE. (No flip flops or crocs or sandals) They are welcome to bring a change of shoes to school for PE lessons. Chasing fleeing and dodging games, kicking punting and dribbling activities require athletic shoes to increase safety and success! We also ask children to bring a full water bottle with their name on it to all PE lessons and also wear a hat for all PE lessons scheduled on the ES Field. Parents are also welcome to join in or watch PE lessons. 

 The PE department manage a recess box in the ES Plaza with sports equipment for children to use during their play time. Children simply need to hand in their school ID to a supervisor located at the recess box. At the end of play children return the borrowed equipment and collect their Student ID card. This system helps students be responsible. If a child does not return the equipment their ID will be handed in to their child’s PE teacher.

All of the above information can also be found on your child’s PE teacher’s blog along with schedules, videos, photos and other information about PE lessons. We have just posted videos from the recent ES PE student led conferences for Kindergarten and Grade 1.

SWIM AND SURVIVE

Grade 1, 2, 3 and 4 classes have just completed the Swim and Survive programme as part of the swimming component of their Physical Education lessons.

The Swim and Survive programme is a comprehensive swimming and water safety initiative of the Australian Royal Life Saving Association that seeks to increase the swimming and water safety skills of all children in order to prevent drowning and increase participation in safe aquatic activity.

Swim and Survive programme provides a level of protection and aims to provide children with solid foundation skills in swimming, survival and basic rescue skills. In addition to a developing strong and effective swimming techniques, Swim and Survive teaches theory and problem solving technqiues that relate to personal survival and water safety,

Students recently completed this online quiz to demonstrate their knowledge of safety techniques. Certificates recognizing Swim and Survive competency will be distributed with reports at the end of the year.

Second Swim Session

DEAR PARENTS,

The Physical Education second swimming session for your child will start on March 10, 2014 and end on March 28, 2014. Please be assured that all precautions will be taken to provide for the safety, ease and comfort of students. Two swimming teacher assistants will help me conduct the lessons.

Please have your child bring swim gear (one-piece suit for girls, swim trunks for boys), towel, comb, change of clothes, extra pair of underwear and a plastic bag for wet suits. Swim goggles and swim cap are optional. “Easy to put on” footwear is also advisable.

If your child can not swim because of medical reasons, a note from you or your physician will be appreciated.

Thank you for your support to the Physical Education Program. We will continue learning lifelong water safety skills. All students are expected to participate in swimming.

Sports Day reminder

The ES annual sports day is Friday February 14th All families are invited to attend. All children will bring home a program the week before Sports day and information can be found on the PE teachers’ blogs. Our focus is understanding that physical activity provides opportunities for health, enjoyment, self-expression, challenge and social interaction as well building a sense of community and school spirit for teachers, students and their families.

We would like two parents per grade level to take photographs on Sports day to be used in the Closing Ceremony slide shows. If interested please contact Steve McCallum McCallumS@ismanila.org  before Sports day to go through the protocols for taking photos.

 

We encourage students to display good sportsmanship. As parents you can play a significant role in helping your child become a good sport.  Here are some ways to help your child develop good sportsmanship and ensure that sports day is a positive experience.

 

1. Be a good role model for your children. Children learn by example, so show them how to practice good sportsmanship by not always expecting to win. Explain that winning is not always an option, but that it is always appropriate to be a good sport.

2. Good sportsmanship is a side effect of having good character. Teach your children how to interact with their elders, coaches and peers with a positive attitude, one that shows respect for all involved in the game.

3 Healthy competition is great, but make sure to emphasize other aspects of the game. Friendship, skill, exercise and good sportsmanship are major factors that contribute to a successful experience. After games ask your child “Did you enjoy that?” “That looked like fun!” rather than “Did you win?” Remember the number one reason that children consistently give as to why they participate in sport, is to have fun and be with their friends. Emphasize this aspect in your post game conversations. We want to convey a love of being physically active rather than a love of winning so all children will continue to be active, enjoy and play sports throughout their lifetime.

Sports day photographers

Dear Parents ,

 

ES Sports day is coming up on Friday February 14th.  At this stage we are looking for some parent photographers to take grade level photos on the day. We are looking for two parents per grade level to follow that grade level around for the day taking action shots. These photos will then be used in the Closing Ceremony slide shows on the day. If you are interested please contact Steve McCallum (McCallumS@ismanila.org) before Friday 1st February to finalise parent volunteers and go through the protocols for taking photos.

Sunday – Bike Day, Health Day, Carless Day – Pasig City

Looking for something active to do with your family on a Sunday morning? Try biking?

 “Bike Day, Health Day, Carless Day” takes place every Sunday at F. Ortigas Jr. Road, Ortigas Center, in Barangay San Antonio, Pasig City.

The road is off limits to all motorized vehicles starting from 6 a.m. up to 6 p.m. to make way for non-motorized vehicles like bicycles, skates, skateboards and scooters.

People can jog, walk or ride the 900-meter-long thoroughfare. Don’t worry if you don’t have your own bike – there are several stores set up offering different types of bikes for rent.

Give it a try this Sunday.
