From PE department:
Parents sometimes ask us where they can buy iron-on labels for PE uniforms, swimsuits, towels etc. Here is one contact I can recommend: her name is Malou and her e-mail contact is itsmine.manila@gmail.com
There are three packages to choose from:
Package 1 - 30 Labels for PhP 300.00
Package 2 - 50 Labels for PhP 400.00
Package 3 - 100 Labels for PhP 600.00
Only one name can be printed per package. The labels only come in white with black print. Delivery within Metro Manila is FREE. She will send you an order confirmation and a detailed payment procedure. She usually request clients to deposit their payment to her bank account. (Details will be given with the order confirmation) The iron on labels will be delivered to you by courier 3 to 4 days after she receives confirmation of your deposit. Your child’s PE teachers will be more than happy to return any misplaced items to their owner if they are all clearly labeled.
The Physical Education department has a green box in the ES Plaza with sports equipment for children to use during their play time. It has jump ropes, (short, long and Double Dutch ropes) balls of many sizes and shapes and Frisbees. ECLC – Grade 4 children are allowed to borrow equipment but need to hand in their school ID to a supervisor who is stationed at the green box. At the end of play when children return the borrowed equipment they will be given back their school ID. This system helps students be responsible and be active outside of PE lessons. You can support this program by ensuring your child brings their ID to school each day so they have the opportunity to borrow equipment at recess.

Looking forward to meet you at open house. Please make time to visit your childs PE teacher so we can tell you how we intend to use all the fantastic facilities and equipment here at ISM. Our goal’s are to teach circus skills to 2nd graders, sportsmanship to 3rd graders and game sense to 4th graders. At ISM PE is fun and for everyone.
This is my ninth year in ISM and I look forward to a fun and exciting school year. I will be teaching 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th graders. I am also your Afterschool activity coordinator for elementary school.
I have background in coaching high school sports such as wrestling, powerlifting, track and field and american football. I have also done a lot of building construction work and piloted a semi- submersible submarine as a part time job while I was teaching in Guam.
PE is fun and for everyone! Stay fit!
School holidays are almost here! This is a special time of year for many children. A chance to stay outside and play all day. Or so it used to be. Many children will spend these holidays indoors no doubt watching television and playing computer games. These can both be entertaining and educational, but moderation is the key and these indoor pursuits should not be at the expense of all other activity, especially regular physical activity. It is important for the social and physical development of children to learn to play and engage in a wide variety of physical pursuits. Children who do not physically play on a regular basis are slow to cross the ‘proficiency barrier’ of fundamental motor skills. Some children and adults only cross this barrier in only one or two of the fundamental motor skills and are more likely to become inactive adults. These fundamental motor skills include run, vertical jump, kick, punt, overhand throw, catch, leap, dodge, ball bounce, forehand strike and two hand side-arm strike. Most children are capable of crossing this proficiency barrier between the ages of 8 –11 years of age, providing they are active on a regular basis. The average time required to master each fundamental motor skill is between 240 – 500 minutes. Physical education lessons will expose children to all of these skills. However, physical education lessons two or three times a week does not provide adequate rehearsal time for many of today’s increasingly inactive children. AS PE educators we need your support. A child that crosses this proficiency barrier possesses mature movement patterns for the above mentioned skills. Once children cross this barrier they are ready to move onto the game skills involved in almost any sport. Encouraging your child to be physically active this summer will certainly help them develop their motor skills and set the stage for an active lifestyle. The physical emotional and mental health benefits of an active lifestyle are well documented. This is probably the easiest homework you may ask of your children! Are your children receiving their daily dose of exercise? From ES PE department.

We hope you all had an “active” holiday. Please send photos of your children being active over the break to share with the PE department. If any families have photos of swimming with the Whale sharks at Donsol we would love to see them. We are looking for photos of children actively involved in water sports as part of an article in the upcoming Bamboo Shoots on swimming and all the fun activities we can enjoy once we learn to swim safely – such as scuba, sailing canoeing, kayaking, surfing, parasailing, water skiing, jet boating etc. We would also love to see photos of parents being active with their children as research tells us this is the best way to foster lifelong activity in your children. Please rename photos adding your child’s name and grade level and forward photos to Pekina@ismanila.org.
Thank-you to those parents that came to Sports day. In our reflections on Sports day we discuss the many varied reasons people choose to be active. Physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, self expression, challenge, health and social interaction. Some of us like to be challenged and hence enjoy competitive sports. However it is important to recognize that not every child is drawn to competitive sports. Others are active because it provides health benefits, and for many children physical activity is a chance to be with friends. The number one reason children give us is that physical activity is simply fun! Sports day provides a springboard for some in depth discussions about the different reasons people choose to be active. Our role in physical education is to help all students develop the competencies and beliefs necessary for incorporating physical activity in their lives. At ISM, physical education is for everyone!

Sports day Theme Song – All aboard the Sportsmanship
All aboard, All aboard (sound of ship’s horn in background)
CHORUS**
All aboard the sportsmanship
C’mon everybody, gotta take this trip
Respect each other by behaving right
You get nowhere if you cuss and fight
Instrumental
You can show everybody how to be good fans
Good sports on the field and in the stands
We can do what’s right, if we choose to show
Some class whether we win or loose
You got to teach your parents how to behave
I know sometimes you’ll have to be brave
You got to teach your coach how to keep his cool
Lets take ‘em all to sportsmanship school
Repeat chorus **
Instrumental
The most important thing is to play as a team
If you work together, you can reach your dream
But if you loose a game you still can learn
If you give it your all, you’ll get your win and turn
Real champions don’t act like jerks
Don’t need to brag they just get to work
They show what they got Oh! When they step on the court
No need to showboat if you’re really a sport
Repeat chorus** 2x
Our school, International School Manila, has registered Grade 4 students to participate in the PE Central Challenge©. The PE Central Challenge© is a unique program designed to encourage students to practice and improve their motor skills and be recognized for their accomplishments. This program was designed and is sponsored by PE Central (pecentral.org), the premier Web site in the U.S. for Physical Education teachers. It is designed to encourage families, schools, and community organizations to help all children become more skillful movers, which, in turn, will encourage youngsters to become more physically active.
The PE Central Challenge© is not a one-time test, but rather a set of challenges that your child can practice and improve upon. Your child is encouraged to take as many chances as it takes to complete each of the challenges. There are 6 tasks that make up the Challenge©. These six challenges are:
Continuously jumping a single rope for 90 seconds.
Throwing and catching using the hands with a partner.
Strike a ball with a paddle or a racket in the air continuously for 60 seconds to your self.
With a partner, travel across an eight foot long 2″ x 4″ board placed on the ground and switch places without touching the floor.
In a group of 3, volley a ball (not a beach ball or balloon) without letting the ball hit the ground.
Hula hoop for 20 seconds without letting the hula hoop touch the ground.
Participation certificates can be earned by all participants and individual pins will be awarded to those students who successfully complete all or most of the challenges.
The PE Central Challenge© is a wonderful opportunity for your child to improve and be recognized for their motor skills. To increase your child’s chances at successfully completing the tasks and earning a pin or certificate I am strongly encouraging our students to practice at home. You can watch videos of the skills being performed by visiting the ISM ES PE student portal.
We began the PE Central Challenge© in September 2009. The last day for students to complete the Challenge is April 30th 2010.
All children in elementary physical education will swim for two blocks during the school year, approximately 24 PE lessons. One block in the first semester and a second block in the second semester. We currently use the Australian Swim and Survive Program. Swim and Survive provides a broad, balanced program of swimming, water safety and survival skills in preparation for a lifetime of safe activity in, on or near the water.
Swim and Survive develops:
* Swimming technique
* Water safety
* Water confidence
* Survival
* Endurance
Swim and Survive caters for children of all abilities. The early levels provide opportunities to build confidence and respect for the water, whilst the upper levels prepare the child for the increased complexity of their relationship with aquatic environments. Bright and colorful certificates reward children for the many developmental steps that they will take in learning to Swim and Survive. You can visit the site click here to see the specific skills and levels your child will be learning.
